Success Stories

This is Darren's story and it is typical of many of our residents.

My name is Darren and nine years ago I was in the army. I travelled the world and met some amazing people. Everything was going great until my mother died. I couldn’t deal with it and became a very heavy drinker. I left the army and came back home to my wife. I got a job which had long, tiring hours. Then a few years later I split with my wife. My drinking got worse and I lost everything. I was constantly moving from home to home, flat to flat. I never stayed in one place for longer than six months. Then two and a half years ago, I came to Greystones and stayed here for three months. It was a very pleasant place and all the staff were very helpful and welcoming. But then I found a flat and got a new job. I was still a heavy drinker and after a short while, I lost my job and my drinking problem got even worse. I couldn’t afford alcohol anymore, but either way I needed a drink. I sold all my furniture just to buy alcohol and I ended up sleeping on the floor for about a year. I wasn’t able to pay for the flat any longer and eventually I was evicted. I couldn’t cope and I was nearly driven to suicide. You may laugh at this now, but I just couldn’t bring myself to commit suicide knowing I still had beers left. Eventually, I went to New Charter who sent me to Housing Options, I searched for a place to stay and they brought me along to Greystones again and I’ve been living a happy life here ever since. Greystones Shelter is just such a great place to be and now I feel I can start to build my life back up again. Who knows what the future will hold for me...
